What If There’s No Job Ad?

This is a truly valid question, and one that many of my students ask me. Sometimes we’ll come across an employment opportunity without the benefit of a complete description of duties and responsibilities, and/or without a list of desired qualifications. What do we do in cases like this? How do we set up a focused resume and cover letter without the thing on which to focus them?

The easiest and most logical thing to do in these cases is to use job ads of positions similar to the position you’re applying for. Let’s face it, positions of the same title in similar organizations are probably going to be asking for the same things. So if you come across a position for which there is no detailed job ad like the one we’ve been discussing, search for a job for which there IS detail and use that one in place.

Be sure, however, that there are enough similarities in the positions to make such assumptions. You wouldn’t, for example, substitute an HR position in the government for an HR position in the food services industry. Imagine how different the positions would be. The food services industry would probably not care about things like security clearances or military service, while these qualities are desired in many government positions.
